Troubleshooting Tips
If you have any trouble in the installation of Lightroom Presets, below you can find the most common mistakes and how to easily fix them.
If you can not install Presets to your version of Lightroom, check if you use correct version
First, check if you use the correct version of Lightroom.
When you download Presets you get XMP, LRTEMPLATE, and DNG files. You shouldn’t try using DNG files on the desktop version of Lightroom or XMP and LRTEMPLATE on the mobile app.
Also, if you have an older version of Lightroom (older than 7.2.) you should use LRTEMPLATE instead of XMP files.
Don’t foget to extract (unzip) files before you install it
A lot of first-time users forget to extract zipped files and try to upload them directly to Lightroom, but it’s not possible.
So, before you install Lightroom Presets don’t forget to extract (unzip) them.
If you are a Mac user you will extract them with one click (just open the files and they will automatically become unzipped). But if you use Windows, you should use tools like WinZip, WinRAR, 7-Zip, or others. You probably already installed some of these tools.
On Android smartphones and iPhones you will extract them when you try to open them, so just don’t forget to click on extract.
Import preset to correct folder
When you import preset you should do so to Develop Presets folder.
Use develop module, not library to apply Presets to your photos
You apply Presets on the same module where you edit them. So, use develop module when you want to apply Lightroom Presets.
Enable Presets panel if you don’t see it
If you don’t see Presets panel it’s probably disabled. You can enable it if you go to Preferences then to Presets tab and uncheck Store presets with this catalog. Then you should see Presets panel.
However, in rare situations, you may do the same as above but check Show Partially Compatible Develop Presets instead.
Don’t forget to backup your Lightroom Presets
Last but not least important, ALWAYS backup your Lightroom Presets. You don’t know if you will catch some virus or malware which should corrupt your files. And some of these files could be your Lightroom Presets.
We advise you to back up your Presets to at least some of your external storage (like an external hard drive) and if possible to cloud storage. This is the process we use for all our files, no matter if this is just a document, photography, or Lightroom Preset.
